World Council of Optometry
Committees

The WCO depends upon committed volunteers to donate their time and expertise to achieving our mission. Our committees include:
 
 Communications Committee – strengthens communications to members and other target audiences via changes in operating procedures, technology and communications tools.
 
 Constitution & By-Laws Committee – reviews the WCO Constitution and Bylaws and recommends amendments as necessary.
 
 Education Committee – facilitates the advancement and enhancement of optometric education worldwide.
 
 World Conference on Optometric Education Steering Committee – manages the content, speaker identification, programmatic and logistical matters of the World Conference on Optometric Education.
 
 Executive Committee – manages the operations and implements the projects and priorities identified by the members and Governing Board.
 
 Fellowship Committee – reviews host and volunteer applications for the Fellowship Program while recommending policies relative to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, application process, project accountability and outcomes assessment.
 
 Finance Committee – responsible for the fiscal management of the WCO, including budget development, periodic financial analysis and reporting.
 
 Global Eye Health Council – industry and optometric leaders share insights regarding the growth of eye and vision care services and products within the context of a public health framework.
 
 Legislation, Registration & Standards Committee – assists member countries with legislative and regulatory matters affecting the public and profession.
 
 Accreditation Working Group – considers issues regarding optometric education and competence assessment programs relative to the standards proposed by the Global Competency-Based Model for the Scope of Practice in Optometry
 
 Global Commission on Ophthalmic Standards – run by a panel of scientists to inform and assure consumers that ophthalmic products meet minimum standards or specifications; to assist practitioners in selecting products or equipment for use in their practices; and to permit manufacturers to represent that their products have been independently determined to meet certain standards or specifications.
 
 Global Competency-Based Model for the Scope of Practice of Optometry Working Group – refines the working document to provide benchmarks for performance criteria and indicators.
 
 World Congress on Optometric Globalization Steering Committee – manages the content, speaker identification, programmatic and logistical matters of the World Congress on Optometric Globalization.
 
 Membership Committee – develops and implements a membership recruitment and retention strategy to strengthen the collective voice of optometry worldwide.
 
 Public Health & Development Committee – works on projects and forges alliances with other organizations in support of VISION 2020: The Right to Sight.
 
 Refractive Error Study in Children Working Group & Project Team – strives to assess the feasibility of conducting a major study that estimates the prevalence of vision impairment and associated refractive error and the use of corrective spectacles in school children.
 
 VISION 2020 Roadmap Committee – develops the public health took kit that outlines a strategic course for optometry’s active involvement in VISION 2020 programs. The roadmap identifies key priorities, leverage points, gaps and constraints, technical considerations and operational strategies for the improvement of eye and vision care.
